Epsiode 01: Who I Am with Joshua K. McMillion

The Foundation of My Leadership Journey

Featuring Joshua McMillion | Tales of Leadership Podcast Ep. 1

This episode sets the foundation for the entire Tales of Leadership journey. Before defining leadership, frameworks, or principles, it starts with something more important—understanding the why behind it all.

Leadership is not just about what you know. It is about who you are, what you’ve experienced, and why you choose to lead. This episode lays out the mission, vision, and purpose behind building Purposeful Accountable Leaders (PALs), while also sharing the personal journey that shaped it.

At its core, the mission is simple: develop leaders who can multiply value in their organizations and personal lives. The vision is bold—impact one million lives in the next ten years. But none of that matters without a clear why. When your purpose is clear, your actions become unstoppable.

The journey begins in rural West Virginia, where leadership was not something that came naturally. Growing up without confidence and facing early struggles shaped the understanding that leaders are not born—they are forged through life experiences. Sports became the turning point, building confidence and opening the door to leadership opportunities.

That journey continued through college and into the military, where leadership lessons were forged through challenge, failure, and responsibility. From Ranger School to combat deployments, each experience reinforced a key truth—leadership is not about personal gain, it is about service.

A defining moment came during deployment, taking over a platoon after loss and hardship. That moment shifted the mindset from “what can this position do for me?” to “what value can I bring to my team?” That shift became foundational. The moment leadership becomes about serving others instead of yourself is the moment you truly begin to lead.

Throughout the journey, there were setbacks—physical injuries, personal challenges, and loss—but each one added depth to the leadership perspective. Commanding soldiers, leading through tragedy, and supporting families during difficult times reinforced the responsibility leaders carry beyond the mission.

Transitioning from the infantry to the Army Acquisition Corps introduced a new leadership challenge—leading without authority. It required influence, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of leadership beyond rank. That experience reinforced the importance of coaching, mentoring, and developing others.

The decisive point came with the realization that leadership was not just a profession—it was a purpose. The passion for serving others combined with the desire to build leaders created a clear direction forward. That is what led to the creation of McMillion Leadership Coaching and the Tales of Leadership platform.

This platform is not just about sharing knowledge—it is about shortening the learning curve for others. It is about giving leaders the tools, perspectives, and experiences needed to grow faster and lead better. Your purpose is not just about what you achieve—it is about the impact you create in others.

Final Thoughts

Understanding your why is the foundation of leadership. Without it, discipline fades, purpose weakens, and direction becomes unclear.

Leadership is shaped through experience, refined through failure, and strengthened through service. The journey is not linear, and it is not easy—but it is worth it.

If you do not define your why, you will struggle to define your path.

After Action Review (AAR)

  1. What is your why, and is it strong enough to sustain you through challenges?

  2. How have your life experiences shaped the leader you are today?

  3. Are you leading for personal gain, or are you focused on serving and developing others?
