Episode 02: Defining Leadership with Joshua K. McMillion

Defining Leadership

Featuring Joshua McMillion | Tales of Leadership Podcast Ep. 2

This episode breaks down one of the most fundamental questions in leadership: what is leadership? Drawing from military doctrine, influential thinkers, and personal experience, this conversation reframes leadership away from position and toward influence, action, and responsibility.

There are many definitions of leadership—whether it is influencing people, providing purpose and direction, or inspiring others through character and action. But one truth remains constant: leadership is not about rank, title, or position. Leadership is about people—and your ability to influence them.

At its core, leadership is about inspiration. Leaders must move individuals and teams from what they believe is impossible into what is possible. This requires vision, clarity, and the ability to guide others along a shared path. Leadership is not passive—it is a verb. It demands action, ownership, and intentionality.

To define leadership more clearly, the PRO framework is introduced: proficiency, reputation, and output. These three elements form the foundation of effective leadership.

Proficiency is the ability to understand and leverage the tools available to you. Leaders are not required to be the expert in everything, but they must understand how to orchestrate the capabilities of their team. When leaders try to be the expert in all areas, they create bottlenecks and limit growth. True proficiency comes from understanding how to align strengths to achieve results.

Reputation is built through consistent actions and grounded in core values. It is your character on display over time. Leaders must define their values—such as respect, integrity, and duty—and allow those values to guide their decisions. Reputation takes years to build but can be lost in a moment. Your reputation is your leadership currency—protect it at all costs.

Output is the measurable result of leadership. Leaders are placed in positions to achieve results, and those results must be consistent. However, results start with self-leadership. Without discipline, preparation, and intentional action, leaders cannot effectively guide others. It begins with small daily wins that compound over time.

A critical takeaway in this episode is the importance of self-leadership. Before you can lead others, you must lead yourself well. This includes establishing routines, maintaining discipline, and preparing mentally and physically to lead effectively. When leaders fail to prepare themselves, they fail their teams.

Leadership is also about setting the conditions for success. Whether it is preparing for a critical meeting or organizing a complex operation, leaders must create clarity and direction so their teams can execute effectively. This requires foresight, discipline, and the ability to think ahead. If you cannot lead yourself, you cannot lead others.

Final Thoughts

Defining leadership requires moving beyond outdated ideas of rank and authority. Leadership is about influence, inspiration, and execution. It is about how you show up, how you guide others, and how you deliver results.

Proficiency, reputation, and output are not optional—they are essential. Leaders who master these elements create lasting impact, while those who neglect them struggle to lead effectively.

Leadership is not a title you hold—it is a responsibility you live every day.

After Action Review (AAR)

  1. Where are you currently in your level of proficiency, and how are you improving it?

  2. How would you define your reputation—and how would others describe it?
